Jazz events guide for autumn

 

Summer is over, but jazz goes on. And it means that we are ready to present you the review of jazz events for this autumn.

 

September

Koktebel Jazz Festival. This large Ukrainian Open Air fest is set on the 29th of August – the 2nd of September. It will be held for the tenth time at the beginning of the fall in a small townlets Koktebel on the Black Sea shore near the Karadag Mountain. All performances will take place on three separate stages. A well-known British band Mama’s Gun will bring to the festival their new album “The Life And Soul”. Also you will meet the Grammy-awarded band from Sweden Magnus Lindgren Batucada and the Lyapis Trubetskoy group from Byelorussia with the world premiere of their last album “Rabkor”.

 

The long list of participants also includes The Cinematic Orchestra, Nino KATAMADZE and INSIGHT, Goran Bregovic & the Wedding and Funeral Band, Splean, the kabare band Serebryanaya Svadba (Eng. Silver Wedding), Zorge, the Arne Jansen Trio, Chaek, Bjorn Berge, Pulcinella, Non Cadenza, Katya Chilly, GORCHITZA, PUR:PUR. These names are just some of the reasons to attend the anniversary Koktebel Jazz Festival.

The international festival «Art Jazz Cooperation 2012» will be held from August 31st till September 2nd. This Ukrainian jazz festival has already become a real brand of Volyn region. The fifth festival will bring together different genres of jazz music, as well as several different cities. This year Lutsk and Rovno shall become the centers of cultural life and celebrate the beginning of the “new season” of the Ukrainian festival movement. Main concerts of the festival will take place in Lutsk castle on August 31st and September 1st, then in the Rovno Music and Drama Theatre on September 1st and 2nd. This year the list of participants includes Nino Katamadze and Insight band (Georgia), Dislocados (Ukraine), Polar Expedition Jazz Quartet (Ukraine-Poland-Norway-Sweden), Beata Glavenkova (Chzech Republic), The Three Waves Trio (Ukraine-Poland-USA) and others.

The jazz festival “Live In Blue Bay” (Koktebel) will be held from the 6th till the 9th of September. “Live in Blue Bay” is the first Ukrainian non-commercial fest of jazz music set up as an alternative to commercial projects connected with light music. The festival has been held for three years for the moment, each year the main stage attracts no less than 6000 spectators and gathers more than 100 professional musicians. It means that the audience misses live music and good performances. “Live in Blue Bay” became one of the key events of Crimean fall, main principles of the festival still remain the same – Open Air format and free admission for everyone.

The festival devoted to the memory of the great jazzman Louis Armstrong will be held in Sussex (Great Britain) from the 7th till the 10th of September. Jazz fans from all over the world come to South Downs Holiday Village where the main events take place. All styles of jazz are presented at Louis Armstrong Celebration Festival. The 13th festival will bring together world stars of jazz, among them drummers (John Petters & Baby Jools), musicians playing wind instruments (Alan Gresty, Allen Beechey, Cuff Billett & Andy Dickens, Jack Free & Mike Pointon, John Wurr, Trevor Whiting, Karl Hird & Brian White), pianists (Martin Litton, JJ Vinten, Colin Bray & Keith Nichols), guitar players (Jonathan Graham & Tim Phillips, Annie Hawkins & Heather Birt, Keith Donald.

 

Three days of the festival are filled with events; in particular there will 3 concerts on the first day (Dixieland, Gypsy Jazz, and Chicago & All That Jazz) and as much as 5 on the second. Besides the guests can attend an educational forum devoted to the problems of contemporary jazz.

 

XIII open festival of wind and jazz music “September in Tikhvin” will be held in Tikhvin (Leningrad region, Russia) on the 15th and the 16th of September.

 

A concert of orchestral works will be presented by big band of Saint-Petersburg Philharmonic of Jazz Music, conducted by saxophonists Kirill Bubyakin and Sergey Bogdanov. The festival artistic director, local pianist and composer Igor Volodin will perform twice – with “Tikhvin” quartet and with Igor Volodin Group, the latter performance featuring a special guest, chromatic harmonica virtuoso Maxim Nekrasov from Saint-Petersburg.

 

The performance of New City Band ensemble shall bring together Russian musicians from Veliky Novgorod and Yaroslavl and African jazzmen from Cameroon and Ghana.

 

The Jake Pisak and Roman Arye guitar duo from Israel will perform guitar jazz. The program concludes with performance of Swiss power-trio Plaistow presenting contemporary improvisations on the edge of jazz, minimalistic rock and dub.

 

Odessa JazzFest will once again be held in Odessa (Ukraine) from the 21st till the 23rd of September 2012. The legendary Polish jazzman Zbignew Namyslovsky and his quintet shall come to Odessa for the first time, as well as the Grammy-nominated German trio Klazz Brothers! You will meet also experimental ethno-jazz cocktail from Asea Sool, the intriguing trio Brein’s Cafe and the trio VEIN with the jazz interpretations of Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess”, listen to Italian group Kekko Fornarelli Trio and French band Paradox. Performance of Sergey Terentiev and Yuri Kuznetzov shall conclude the festival, as well as traditional night jam-session.

 

 

The third jazz festival Chernihiv Jazz Open will be held from the 27th till the 29th of September in Chernihiv (Ukraine). Headliners of the festival are the French star group Paris Combo. There are a great deal Ukrainian bands, which performs original jazz and experimental music among the participants of the festival.

 

This year there are three separate stages on the festival. The first day is devoted to ethno jazz and world music, and the second one to traditional jazz.

 

October

Jazz festival Vilnius City Jazz will be held in Vilnius (Letuva) from the 11th till the 14th of October. The oldest Vilnius festival features the best jazzmen of Lithuania as well as the foreign stars of jazz.

 

Vilnius Jazz festival is known for its creative and ambitious programs and improvisational performances. The list of participants in 2012 includes Jean Louis, Das Kapital, Miyeon — Park Je Chun, Meta Marie Louise, Martin Lubenov’s Jazzta Prasta, Colin Vallon Trio, Petras Vy?niauskas — Juozas Mila?ius, Asaf Sirkis Trio, Logic and many others

The V international jazz festival Jazz in Kiev will be held in Kyiv (Ukraine) from the 26th till the 28th of October.

 

In 2012 musicians from the USA, Japan, Sweden, Poland, Norway, Mexico and Ukraine shall perform for Ukrainian audience. Among them are young, but bright metropolitan orchestra Kiev Big Band (Ukraine); superband Miles Smiles (USA), featuring the stage partners of Miles Davis, one of the most prominent musicians of the XX century; Liberetto project, founded by a prominent Swedish musician Larse Danielsson (special guest - Leszek Mozdzer); famous Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara and her Hiromi the Trio Project (Japan-USA), as well as Mike Mainieri Northers Lights (USA-Norway) and Kenny Werner All-Star Quintet (USA-Mexico).

November

 

The Russian-German project-festival "Jazz in the Autumn" will be held in Moscow (Russia).
Contemporary German jazz musicians will play at the event. The audience will appreciate the consummate skill of the pianist, guitarist and singer Ian Thomas - an adherent of the "non-classical jazz". Also, we will hear «Tuomi-trio" and the jazz-rock master Joachim K?hn. The event will be held from 25 to 29 October and from 1 to 3 November.

 

From 1st to 30th of November will be held Vienna Jazz Floor in the capital of Austria. The festival program includes more than a hundred concerts of jazz, blues, soul, rock, avant-garde and electronic music. Blues lovers will hear DANA GILLESPIE, BB & BLUES SHACK, Rhythm & Blues Stimme, Richie Kotzen. Sounds of bop, mainstream, modern jazz (all formats) are at the festival: DOUBLE TANDEM, Paul Lovens and others.

 

14th Jazznojazz Festival will be held in Zurich (Switzerland) from 31th of October to 3rd of November.
Since 1971, the AMR Association holds the festival dedicated to contemporary and classical jazz and all its varieties. This year the festival will bring musicians such as John McLaughlin, Marcus Miller, Y'akoto, Nicole Willis & The Soul, The Earth Wind & Fire Experience, Incognito, Larry Carlton, Nils Petter Molvaer, Jazzanova and many other interesting musicians.

The 31st «Tampere Jazz Happening» will be held in November, 1-4, in Tampere (Finland). One of the best jazz festivals in the Northern Europe. 26 bands will participate in the "Happening-2012", 18 of them are international projects. The program balanced names of the great masters and young talents, who holds the future of jazz.
There are among the participants american pianist with indian roots Vijay Iyer, trumpet virtuoso Ibrahim Maalouf, Chicago percussionist Adam Rudolph.
For the first time in a decade one of the most important guitarists in jazz history John Scofield will play in Tampere, with his current trio (it includes legendary musician elektrobasist Steve Swallow too).
An important event will be the return to the Tampere famous New York's The Jazz Passengers, who will bring the program of his new album «Reunited».
Avant-garde jazz will be presented by Peter Br?tzmann Chicago Tentet, Gerry Hemingway, ethnic style supplement by Marko Markovi? Orchestra, Ebo Taylor (Ebo Taylor), and Finnish musicians will also perform at the festival.

Tbilisi Jazz Festival will be held in the capital of Georgia from 20th to 25th of November, which will be headlined by such stars of the world jazz scene as Dee Dee Bridgewater, THE CHICK COREA TRIO with Christian McBride & Brian Blade; Jack DeJohnette Group, Nils Landgren Funk Unit.
